Kurbaan a compelling thriller

Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Viviek Oberoi, Om Puri, Kirron KherDirector: Renzil D'Silva
Stripped to its bone, Rensil D'silva's Kurbaan is an edge-of-the-seat thriller that seldom loses its grip on your attention. Credible performances from its leads, and a nail-biting screenplay make up for the plot holes that threaten to eat into this otherwise engaging film.
Set in post-9/11 America, Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan star as Avantika and Ehsaan, professors at a Delhi campus who move to New York after a whirlwind romance, that involves making out in the college staff room, and a prompt marriage. Avantika, who was teaching in the States prior to her stint in India, returns to her original job, and Ehsaan accompanies her, hoping to find a position for himself too. The couple moves into an Indian neighborhood in suburban New York, where Avantika stumbles upon the shocking secret that her husband is part of a sleeper cell of Islamic fundamentalist terrorists that's hatching a plot to bomb the New York subway. She enlists the help of a news channel cameraman Riyaaz Masood (played by Vivek Oberoi), who infiltrates the gang to foil their attack.
More compelling than the similarly themed New York, Kurbaan scores for its brisk pacing, and for the fact that it doesn't offer an over-simplistic view of the terrorism issue. The film allows enough room for all perspectives and avoids romanticizing the terrorist as a victim seeking revenge, even if characters like Bhaijaan (played by Om Puri) and Aapa (played by Kirron Kher) make the same point repeatedly. It's in a dramatic classroom scene in which Vivek Oberoi's character Riyaaz confronts white students and their predictable logic, that the film reveals its neutral stance.
The key problem with Kurbaan, however, is that it can't decide if it wants to be a serious film addressing a burning issue, or a commercial potboiler set against the backdrop of terrorism. How else do you explain such lapses in logic as Riyaaz's needlessly heroic decision to explore a possible terrorist situation himself, instead of alerting the cops right away? Or the terrorist group's decision to include Riyaaz in their mission without as much as a thorough background check. Even the love scene between Saif and Kareena, although aesthetically shot, has a distinctly 'filmi' logic - Avantika's seducing Ehsaan to get her hands on vital information that could prevent the attacks.
Another careless oversight on the part of Kurbaan is the more-or-less insignificant role the FBI plays in all of this. Anyone who's traveled to the United States post 9/11 or even watched a handful of recent Hollywood thrillers will tell you that America became a different country since September 11 happened. Even a mention of words like 'bomb' or 'terrorist' could get you into serious trouble. Which is why it's a little alarming to note that Ehsaan roams about freely on the streets of New York without bothering with so much as a guise, when the FBI have clear photographs of this most-wanted terrorist. Or that he can walk into a bar and stab a man to death, or escape from a run-in with the cops. Just watch the recent Harrison Ford-starrer Crossing Over in which the FBI swoops down on a teenage Bangladeshi girl for a class essay she wrote in which she may have sounded at best 'casual' to the Twin Towers attack. These irregularities might be dismissed as nitpickings in an average masala entertainer, but they stand out in a film like this which prides itself on attention to detail and credibility of intent.
Despite its hiccups, Kurbaan works as a suspenseful thriller, sucking you into its drama even though you may have figured out where the story's going. Refer to that terrific scene in which Ehsaan reveals his real identity to Avantika, or the one in which Riyaaz's secret is accidentally revealed to Ehsaan. There is genuine intrigue in these moments, and you're undeniably hooked.
Kurbaan is convincing also for the remarkable acting by its three leads, who are a pleasure to watch. If Saif Ali Khan approaches his part with restraint and minimalist fuss, then Kareena Kapoor goes for a simmering, slow-burning performance that eventually punches you in the gut. Vivek Oberoi, despite the occasionally rickety accent, throws himself into the role and turns in a sincere, spontaneous delivery. As an ensemble, the trio turns Kurbaan into one of the best-acted pieces you've seen all year.
Armed with Hemant Chaturvedi's efficient camerawork and Salim-Suleiman's rousing music score that never distract from the storytelling, director Rensil D'silva makes a confident debut with a film that is both respectable and engaging.I'm going with three out of five for Kurbaan; it's a compelling thriller that doesn't shy away from touching prickly issues.

Namrata & POOJA: the targeted VICTIMS

Deep down in my memoir there is still that dumb pain of loosing our then-sensational- heroine Shrisha Karki, who dided unpopularly with that short-come POPULAR Nude photograph . She was just then 24-year-old when she killed herself over a nude photograph of her published in a tabloid. Shrisha Karki, a former model and television actress who was beginning to find jobs on the big screen, hanged herself on October 13.2002, four days after the newspaper printed the picture. People close to the actress said she was devastated by the photograph that appeared in the Jana Ashtha, or "People's Faith," a left-leaning weekly that is widely read for its exposes of official corruption. Her fiance was scandalised by the photo and, even though she tried to explain her side of the story, severed the relationship.
The final straw, a colleague of the late actress said, was when Karki walked into a beauty salon. A woman working at the parlour told her: "You're in a well-covered dress today. It seems you're used to being naked." Karki stormed out and a few hours later her body was found hanging from the staircase of her home.
This is an one side of the story , the other side -unwritten and infamous never appeared and heard then till this mobile blue-tooth sex visuals of NAMRATA SHRESTHA and POOJA LAMA (again actress and model) happend, back to back last month. When the news of NAMRATA SHRESTHA being alleged of a SEX VIDEO with her boy friend became public, many of us were shocked. Whether we liked it or not, we were led into following the news of that VIDEO, that seemed to be gushing forth out of papers and TV as if a water main had been burst.
I hold no grudge or ill will against anyone when I express my views. None of my comments are meant to be interpreted adversely. I am merely stating my own interpretation of events. I represent no parties in the legal dispute nor do I wish to impede on investigation by competent authorities.
More and more events unfolded as days went by. It was so dramatic with the new arrival of POOJA LAMA'S another shocking SEX VIDEO, where the previous was still an unsolved puzzle for the fans out there. Since then I found myself redoing the whole jig saw puzzle of NAMRATAand POOJA case over and over again to see how pieces were fitting with one another in overall scheme of things.
Out of sheer curiosity, I have followed the story and news articles and following is my analysis on what is going on behind these sensational(PUN Intended)
Much has been inked and said on these videos. Many are only pinpointing the female victims, not a single lip is muttering about and against the male partners in crime. Many so called philoshopers in filmdom and journalism are chewing their nails and seen red with this video viewing. They say this is ilegtimate, immoral. Oh hello, what is legtimate and moral when you don't rise your voice against fashion t.v, against late night pron discos, against the western BLUE FILMS that's been selling out and open in busy roads all over Nepal. I doubt many of you have this sexual fantasy of f*****g RAKHI SAWANT when you see her shower in Reality T.Vs. Why don't you question when KATHMANDU is selling visible skirts to its +2 colleges and whyonly bullshiting our some female newbie. Are they targeted? TIRED!!!!
At the very onset of these events, I had a feeling that Namrata /POOJA and (alsoLate SHRISHA) were being framed by unseen sinners for sake of money.
It is reasonable to assume this not just because money matters but also these are uprising and demanded actressess/models and only videos of famous faces do sell not of mine or yours.
Lastly, I pray and request all of you, please just run behind the best out of human beings ,why look bad when your concern is only good works by them. We don't get shocked when we view our genetials when we shower them..when we do with them. If you are normal,be normal with all these. The defination of legtimacy and morality is- let not any one peep our private life and private doings. After all, all these doings are a person's private affair. Who we are to cry from top roof?? We are no gods,so do we commit mistakes.

Believe it or faint' - In The Name Of Glamour

splendour' says Deepika(changed name) that hooked her in this field. Ramp, some money, few discos, & drinks and behind the curtains...... ahem!ahem...
You envy them and you sympathise them, what must life be like when you are compelled to one of the most lurecative bussiness in town, modelling. And what must it be like to know modelling is ruining the verginity and the secret life of the sexiest, attractive and demanding models. By entering and accepting the law of modelling, you can live the kind of jet-setting life that most can only dream of, with being on the page3 cover, candle nights in stars hotels and some appearences in music v.d.o and so on.
On the other hand, you've got to live with the media glare on practically every aspect of your life. You read about your alleged romance, entertain rumours and digest negative remarks on you. As Poonam Thapa(changed name) famously said,"being a model is the most insecure job in the world". Everytime you do or don't,the headlines scream. Your humilation is public; the pain is suffered in private.
As along-suffering model says "the first time it happens it is shattering. I've, right from the begining, been in struggle and I truly believed I was not that kind of a girl, especially I always believed with such gutsy about n dignity. When the reality got too much to see, I execused me. A part of me wanted to deny it. But it overdid.
"So, I left the ramp with the pride again and went back to my usual routine. But modelling was always there, in a mind-set. A few days later I joined it again I found it very passionate & loved it too much. Also, I guess I behaved, believing like those things(sexual harrasments) won't happen again, When I found new galore and some morally dressed men(out-sidely). But it happened.... again & again & again.
Very few models will talk with such honestly even under anonymity. Though some models revel in the glamour and the spotlight, few will have anything to say about all the rumours surrounding their bussiness. But before you rush to think of them as long-suffering or wronged girls who weep into designer skirts, as they go kitty-party, read on.
In contrast to their beautiful public image, the secret world of many models is one in which show-biz is no less, no discos and parties are beyond reach and life is to be lived in Queen-size. The only rule is: keep it under wraps.
But there are a few-very few-who decide they won't want none of it. Asha Bhujel(changed name), ex-model, when her boss fell in lust with and slept with her, she decided to take a tough stance, eventhough she had dazzling career at the time. "It hurt like hell !"she confesses. "Wether you cry or laugh, it is heard and torn, your life is in the public. And the advice I got from industry's collegues didn't help: 'just leave and pretend it isn't happening and everything will be at the place'. 'Why don't you become best friends with him? 'I heard them all and realized that their thinking is radically different from mine. I can't understand this whole thing about being patient and counting money, shows, cakes and pastries. Counting for what? It can never be the same equation. I could have stayed put(happily or sadly) as no.1 model but I chose not to. Hats off to them if they can live like that, but I couldn't".
Asha Bhujel's decision is ararity in the show-biz. Ultimately, shron of all the trimmings of the gilded life, models have to make their choices pretty much like girls all over the world. The glamour and the disco, ramp, wine and dine are incidental. The relevent, universal dilema of how to deal with the pig boss remains just that-a dilema. Sometimes courage triumphs. And sometimes money matters.
